Have you ever been an audience member watching a speaker kill it on stage and wondered to yourself….”Man, How do they do it?”
If you’re like most people you probably assume that these speakers are just born with the ability to control and entertain a room full of people. Well I am here to tell you that’s simply not true.
Yes Natural Talent Can Play A Big Part But….
I won’t stand here and tell you that being born with traits such as being charismatic or an extrovert won’t give you an edge on public speaking…
…but I also won’t tell you that natural traits and talents are enough to get you through the arduous task of standing in front of an audience of unknowns and deliver a stellar presentation.
There’s much more to it.
Like Any Skill You Need to Put in the Time….
Unlike talents that can be naturally occurring, a skill derives from hard work.
In other words you got to work at it to make it happen!
People seldom see the amount of work that goes into becoming a rock star public speaker.
Now granted we are all naturally born public speakers in the sense that we interact on a daily basis with a wide variety of individuals (unless you suffer from a speaking disorder of course) but that doesn’t mean we can jump up on stage and expect to rule the room, now does it?
I mean… I can throw a baseball, but that doesn’t mean I expect to be a pitcher for the New York Yankees throwing 95 mile per hour fastballs any time soon.
You’re Hitting Many Levels…
When presenting to a large audience, remember that you are trying to make different types of connections.
While one of your audience members might be lured in with your energy level another may be more interested in the facts and statistics that are coming out of your mouth.
You’re going to want spread your game here and try to add as much as you can to your arsenal when it comes to your public speaking skills.
Do not make the mistake that many speakers make of relying on one thing.
A perfect example?
Charisma is great, but it won’t be enough to hit a home run with a group of Engineers working for Boeing while discussing Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
You’re going to need a lot more than charisma to have them leaving saying “Wow what a great presentation!”.
Where to hone in your skills?
