Hey my name is Jason Teteak and I help people get really good at public speaking, and getting rid of boring presentations is what Rule the Room Public Speaking is all about.
Today Im going to show you how to get the audiences attention…
and I’m going to do this by asking you one very important question…
…what if you gave your audience control in the first minute?
Instead of trying to take it from them?
What I mean by that is this, most people stand up here and say “Hey my name is Jason Teteak and here’s all my credentials and let me impart all my wisdom on you….”
And then they expect their audience to sit there and listen and hope and pray that everything they’re going to tell them (because they’re the expert, it must be good anyway) is what they wanted to know.
Plus the people who have a fear of public speaking start to freak out and say “Oh what if this isn’t working?” and they start to get scared and within the first minute the audience starts to literally want to leave.
What if it could all be different?
What if there was one tool you could use, called “The Circle of Knowledge”, that can give your audience control in the first minute.
You might say, “Well, why should I give them control in the first minute?”
Here’s why: Because the number one need of your audience is to feel safe with you, that is their number one need.
It’s not about you at all it turns out, it’s about them.
If you make them feel safe with you guess what?
They will listen to you.
I was just talking with my wife the other day and if she feels like I’m listening to her and she feels safe because of it, she actually doesn’t feel like I’m giving her a solution, when she’s trying to get some empathy from me.
It’s the same thing with your audience…
What if you could listen to them, the way you did with somebody one-on-one in the first minute?
So here’s what this looks like…
You give your introduction and then you ask them this one question…
Take 30 seconds and write down the top three things that “whatever you’re talking about for your presentation” is great.
For example…
If I’m teaching about trees I’d ask…
“Take 30 seconds and write down the top 3 things that makes an amazing tree?”
That’s it.
If I’m doing mine right now, here’s what I would say…
“Take 30 seconds and write down the top 3 things you could do, to give your audience control in the first minute…go.”
They all do this…
Then I’d say, “Now take 30 seconds and turn to the person next to you, and agree on your number one answer.” (This part is optional by the way)
Then assign them relayers, and then they’ll share…
…and when they share, they will give you all of the things that they secretly want you to talk about.
I call this…
GOLD.
And they are going to give you gold.
What’s their initial reaction when you do this?
They’re going to think…
“I’ve never had somebody do this before, wow, this presenter actually wants to listen to me.”
“Why is this presenter doing this?”
And you create this mystery.
Now we’ve got this video, it’s called the Presentation Checklist.
This video will show you how to failure-proof your presentation…
…and one of the things you need to do to failure-proof your presentation…
…is to start with “The Circle of Knowledge…”
…where we go into detail more on this, and all of the things you need to do for your presentation.
We call it the Presentation Checklist.
Try the circle of knowledge right now for your next presentation…
…what’s the question you could ask in the very first minute…
…that get’s them to speak to you…
…you get to get off stage for a little bit…
What are you doing while they’re doing all this?
You’re gathering yourself and figuring out what you’re going to say…
…and then you can actually tie together what they want to know…
…with what you planned anyway.
That is going to give your audience control…
…and it’s going to make you look like the expert AND a listener, which makes them feel safe.
That’s how you start Ruling the Room.
