The sales pitch; it quite literally can make or break your business. People see a pitch as someone trying to sell their idea but there’s much more to it.
Depending on what type of pitch you’re delivering you may be trying to convince someone to take action in 30 seconds (this is usually called the elevator pitch)!
That’s an incredibly short amount of time to generate excitement, make a connection and have someone take the action you desire (most likely an investment).
If you’re a CEO/Entrepreneur/Sales Person…
If you’re any of the above you will be pitching at every opportunity possible. The majority of business owners are constantly pitching their business or ideas to people, and why shouldn’t they? After all, if you’re a business owner most likely than not you are excited about what you sell or the services you provide and you want to share that with the world.
The Quick Do’s and Don’ts of Making a Pitch…
Do have a wide selection of pitches…
Pitches can happen in Elevators, Restaurants, Public Speaking Events, V.P. Offices, you name it. It is for this reason you should have pitches that range anywhere from 30 seconds to 60 minutes. Also, try to create your pitches with your audience in mind. Will you be talking to women, men, older men, college students, etc?
Don’t Lie…
There’s nothing worse than a dishonest individual. If you get caught saying some type of falsehood during a pitch you lose, plain and simple. No one is going to want to invest in someone that they can’t trust.
Do tell an interesting story…
I’m not talking about a novel here but you should always have some material that is intriguing and sparks a bit of curiosity on their behalf. Basically, you’re looking to hook them in.
Don’t be boring…
This is a given but you’d be surprised at how many people come off as boring. Make sure to put your heart and soul into your pitch. No one is going to want to invest in someone who isn’t excited by their own pitch ideas.
Do be aware of your body language…
The body never lies! Remember that. The words coming out of your mouth may be perfect but if your body language is not in sync your audience will notice it. In some cases, weird body language may have people thinking you are not being honest “Why does he look so nervous? He must not be telling me something”.
Don’t let questions throw you off your game…
Questions from potential investors are a great thing! If anything being met with complete silence when delivering a pitch is the worst thing that can happen to you. If they are asking questions then they are engaged and interested. You’re on the right path!
